The Nuclear Chapter  is the voluntary professional organisation that coordinates the national efforts to build capacity in the research and development of nuclear science, engineering and technology. The initial launch towards this goal is via the formation of the Nuclear Chapter within the scope of the SAIEE Power and Energy Section.  Currently the Nuclear Chapter is engaged with broadening its national footprint and the inclusivity of umbrella organisations which are the stakeholders of the health of Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Science.  The Nuclear Chapter scope can be categorised into the six areas as shown below:

Nuclear Science, Engineering and Technology

Research and Development into nuclear phenomena and their application, such as

  • Nuclear Physics and Applied Nuclear Science, Engineering and Technology.
  • Advanced Nuclear Industrialization of the 4th Industrial Revolution : Instrumentation Sensors and IOT, Robotics, Machine Learning and Digital Twins
  • Material Analysis and Forensics
  • Materials Processing
  • Front End Uranium Beneficiation
  • Back End Spent Uranium Management
  • Equipment Inspection and Qualification
  • Regulatory, Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality : Assurances and Licensing

Nuclear Energy

  • Development to support current and future nuclear power stations.
  • Operations post 2024. Koeberg 24/7 Operations, for example the
  • Training and Development of Nuclear Reactor Operators & Engineers
    application of IR 4.0
  • Big Data Driven Enhanced Asset Management and Predictive Maintenance for a 60 year Productive Life
  • Application of Standard PWR Nuclear Power; Competitively; e.g. 2000+ MW at Koeberg Units 3 and 4
  • Application of Advanced High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors and other Small Modular Reactors for Distributed Electricity Generation.
  • Future Prospects of Fusion Reactors

Medical Applications

The application of nuclear science and technology in the field of medicine, such as

  • Radioisotope Production : such as Mo-99, Lu-177, I-131
  • Nuclear Imaging (MRI, PET, SPECT etc)
  • Diagnostic Radiation Medicine
  • Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine
  • Research into COVID 19, Virology Sciences and Public Health

Nuclear Waste and Environmental Studies

Studies into the impact and related management of the  environmental effects of nuclear radiation such as

  • Waste Management incl. Reprocessing
  • Impact of Radiation on human health, for both
  • Nuclear Reactors
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Impact of Radiation on the flora and fauna

Nuclear Nexus of Applications

The application of nuclear science and technology in non direct energy applications with nuclear as a heat source, such as

  • Water Security : Fresh Water from Used, Waste, Sanitation or Salt Water
  • Electric Transport : Bulk Manufacturing of Hydrogen
  • Energy Intensive Heating, Cooling and Smelting : Mining and Mineral Resources Beneficiation
  • Waste Beneficiation : Sanitation and Waste Gasification, Enhanced Public Health and Environmental Care

Nuclear Education

By virtue of the physics and mathematics, unlimited scope for knowledge acquisition, sharing and development; from school, to university to industry; from a graduate to a professional to continuous learning. Continuous demand to strengthen the national capacity to undertake related training and education, such as

  • Short Learning Programs and Continuous Professional Development
  • Undergraduate and Post-Graduate development; from Bachelors, to Masters, to Doctoral to Post Doctoral Qualifications
  • Cross Border, Globalization and Internationalization of Learning and Sharing Experiences
